STRENGTH, BALANCE AND FALL PREVENTION

Ageing can reduce muscle strength, balance and confidence in movement, but all of these abilities respond to training. Good leg strength and balance support walking, climbing stairs, rising from a chair and other everyday activities. Finnish Current Care Guidelines recommend that adults aged 65 and over include varied balance and strength training in their weekly physical activity to improve function and prevent falls.

During Power Plate training, vibration provides a repeated mechanical stimulus, and your muscles activate to maintain your position. Exercises can be performed standing, seated or with support. The movements, positions and level of exertion are always adjusted to your current abilities.

Whole-body vibration training has also produced positive results in studies involving older adults. In a randomised Power Plate study with participants whose mean age was over 82 years, 12 weeks of training improved balance and measures related to functional independence. In another six-month randomised trial, vibration training increased isometric knee-extension strength by 15% and dynamic strength by 16% in older women.

A systematic review published in 2024 identified whole-body vibration as one of the interventions with the most certain evidence of benefit for preventing falls among community-dwelling older adults. An earlier meta-analysis of 14 randomised trials found that whole-body vibration reduced the rate of falls by 33% compared with control interventions.

Your training is planned according to your health, confidence in movement and individual goals. We can practise safe weight shifting, stepping, rising from a chair, climbing stairs and getting up from the floor. The aim is to help you move as safely and independently as possible in everyday life.

Power Plate training does not replace medical assessment of balance or mobility difficulties, physiotherapy or any other necessary rehabilitation. However, it can be used alongside them as individually tailored exercise to support muscle strength, balance, confidence in movement and functional ability.

If you have new dizziness, unexplained falls, sudden muscle weakness or another symptom that has not been assessed, you will be referred for a medical evaluation before training begins.

Book an appointment for your individually tailored Power Plate training and improve your strength, balance and confidence in movement safely.
