Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy

Chemotherapy used to treat breast cancer, particularly taxane-based chemotherapy, can damage the peripheral nerves and cause chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy. Symptoms may include numbness, tingling, burning pain, reduced sensation, muscle weakness and balance problems in the hands and feet. These symptoms can persist after cancer treatment and affect mobility, fall risk and everyday functional capacity.

Power Plate training uses whole-body vibration to activate the neuromuscular system and provide sensory input that challenges proprioception and movement control. Training can be performed in short sessions and, when needed, in supported positions. The aim is to strengthen the lower limbs, improve balance and increase confidence in standing, walking and everyday movement.

In a randomised trial published in 2026, 44 breast cancer survivors with persistent chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy participated in either whole-body vibration resistance training or conventional aerobic and resistance training. Both groups experienced improvements in neuropathy symptom burden and health-related quality of life during the training period. The researchers concluded that vibration resistance training may provide a feasible and time-efficient training option.

Another randomised study involving patients with breast cancer found that moderate resistance training, either alone or combined with whole-body vibration, was safe and feasible during paclitaxel treatment. The training groups showed promising effects on the preservation of sensory function and motor symptoms.

Power Plate does not replace assessment by an oncologist, neurological evaluation, physiotherapy or other rehabilitation following cancer treatment, but it is worth incorporating alongside them as individually tailored training that supports muscle strength, balance and functional capacity. During training, the stage of cancer treatment, severity of neuropathy, sensory changes, pain, muscle strength, balance, fall risk, fatigue, bone health and possible lymphoedema are all taken into account.
