Lower back pain and neck and shoulder problems are often associated with muscle tightness, weakness or uneven loading. Long-term pain may also reduce movement, causing the muscles supporting the spine to become even weaker.
During Power Plate training, vibration enhances muscle activation. The muscles supporting the back, abdomen and pelvis can be strengthened safely with supported exercises, including exercises performed without large movements.
Increased muscle activity stimulates circulation and metabolism in the area being trained. The pumping action of the muscles also supports fluid circulation. As tight muscles relax and weaker muscles become stronger, movement becomes more balanced and controlled.
LOWER BACK PAIN
For persistent lower back pain, training aims to restore spinal mobility and strengthen the deep muscles supporting the core. On the Power Plate, the resistance, position and range of motion of each exercise can be adjusted individually.
A 2024 review examined ten randomised controlled trials involving 828 people with persistent lower back pain. Vibration training improved pain, physical function, balance, and control of body position and movement.
A 2023 review found that vibration training reduced persistent lower back pain and improved back function. Vibration training performed on a platform improved physical function more than the comparison interventions performed without vibration.
STRENGTHENING THE MUSCLES SUPPORTING THE BACK
Vibration makes the muscles work effectively even during short exercises. Each exercise usually lasts 30–60 seconds, after which the position or movement is changed.
A study examining abdominal and back muscle activity found that vibration training increased core muscle activation in people with persistent lower back pain. Stronger supporting muscles help maintain spinal alignment and improve movement control during everyday activities.
NECK AND SHOULDER PROBLEMS
Neck and shoulder tightness is often associated with prolonged sitting, repetitive working positions, stress, and weakness in the muscles supporting the upper back and shoulder blades.
Power Plate training strengthens the muscles of the upper back, shoulders and shoulder blades while also incorporating exercises that improve mobility and relax tight muscles. Vibration enhances muscle activation and helps engage muscles that may be difficult to activate with conventional exercises.
In a randomised controlled trial published in 2024, local vibration reduced neck pain and improved neck mobility and movement control.
Training is always planned according to the cause of the symptoms, any movement restrictions and the client’s individual starting point.
Power Plate training does not replace medical assessment of back, neck or shoulder pain, other pain management or physiotherapy. However, it can be used alongside them as individually tailored exercise to help relieve pain and support mobility, muscle strength and functional ability.
